Apple's Back to the Mac event kicks off in just under 30 minutes, and the company just announced that they will once again be streaming it live to Macs and iOS devices. Point your browser to the Back to the Mac live stream at 10:00 am PDT to get in on the action. We should see news of an updated MacBook Air, iLife '11, and Mac OS X 10.7 Lion.

Apple has been on such a mobile tear lately that many have worried that OS X was being given the shaft. However, Apple’s next press event looks to be all about the Mac hardware and the OS X operating system. The invitation is above, and clearly shows a lion hiding behind that Apple logo. It doesn’t take a lot of thought to put two and two together here—each iteration os OS X has been named after some sort of wild cat, and Lion must be the name of Mac OS X 10.7. News Macs and finally news on Apple’s next major OS? We can’t wait.

With more than 45 million smartphone and tablet users nationwide and ABI Research predicting that 6 billion mobile applications will be downloaded this year alone, businesses, especially those looking to reach consumers, have been frenzied about launching mobile offerings. In the past several years, much of the buzz surrounding the mobile space has been about the iPhone. With the debut of the iPhone 4 earlier this year, many businesses continue to focus their mobile strategy resources solely on this much-hyped operating system. In fact, a recent Kony Solutions survey of Fortune 500 corporations found that a staggering 85% of respondents ranked the iPhone as their top priority device for mobile support.

However, the current mobile landscape is quite fragmented - given the sheer number of handsets available to consumers - and the market isn’t necessarily dominated by the iPhone. A 2010 Gartner report estimated that the iPhone holds just 2.7% of the mobile market share. Notably, Android has surpassed Apple’s iOS, and comScore recently reported that RIM actually continues to capture the most smartphone market share (although Apple just announced that they've surpassed RIM for Q4 2010.) As such, the true market share of the iPhone doesn’t warrant the resources and strategy being dedicated solely to this device by Fortune 500 corporations, and companies in this position stand to lose more than 97% of mobile customers.

In actuality, it’s not even just about smartphones – more than half of mobile users worldwide continue to use a feature phone instead of a smartphone (including the BlackBerry, iPhone, Android and Palm). This is another key factor that businesses often overlook when developing a mobile strategy.

The expansive mobile landscape can be overwhelming for the businesses trying to reach a vast number of consumers. These companies face the challenge of developing brand-consistent mobile applications across a variety of devices and channels. Different delivery channels and multiple operating systems create complicated and costly development, management and maintenance problems for companies looking to capture consumer mindshare and offer a competitive mobile portfolio.

How To Capture Consumer Mindshare
For companies looking to capture consumer mindshare through mobile, the solution is actually quite simple—meet consumers where they are. That means looking beyond just an iPhone application to an integrated mobile strategy that deploys across the more than 8,000 mobile devices and 9 operating systems on the market today. It also means considering the various channels with which consumers engage on their mobile devices, whether it’s mobile web, on-device mobile and tablet applications or SMS.

How To Execute An Integrated Mobile Strategy
One of the biggest concerns for companies when they begin thinking about developing an integrated mobile offering that reaches a variety of devices and channels is the cost associated with developing for each individual operating system and channel, as well as the extended time to market. A smart, fully integrated mobile strategy will leverage technology such as a single application definition or Write Once, Run Everywhere technology to create a mobile offering that can be deployed across the breadth of mobile devices and operating systems.

Using a single application definition allows applications to be designed and developed just once, in a device independent manner, and deployed across multiple channels, including on-device applications, mobile web, SMS, web gadgets, desktop applications, and tablets. Working with a vendor that offers a true single application definition powered platform will also future proof a company’s mobile investment by enabling a company to “change once, change everywhere” by making simultaneous upgrades across all channels with just one change to the mobile offering code. This ability ensures faster adoption of new operating systems and standards as they are introduced, while eliminating maintenance, upgrade and future development costs.

This powerful technology is truly the only solution available that offers ubiquitous deployment of mobile offerings across the entire mobile landscape. The single application definition also optimizes a company’s mobile budget and offers the most significant return on investment by reducing ongoing maintenance, upgrade and development costs without sacrificing functionality or reach.

However, one issue that companies run into when working with some vendors that claim to have a Write Once, Run Everywhere technology is the vendor will develop an application using the least common denominator functionality available to enable the application to run on every device. When evaluating vendors, it’s important for companies to investigate whether the proposed technology allows applications to access the best possible features of each operating system. Rather than using a least common denominator approach, a mobile vendor should enable applications to be optimized for individual device platforms. Exposing extensive platform specific properties and development options is essential to providing consumers with the richest possible experience on each device and in turn, ensuring application adoption.

Planning for 2011
As companies begin to develop their mobile strategies for 2011, it’s important to look beyond just the iPhone and downloadable applications and reach consumers across the entire mobile landscape. Businesses that do so can maximize their mobile potential, capturing the biggest share of the market and converting that to tangible ROI.

As we mentioned in our Windows Phone 7 review, Microsoft has given Mac users a way to sync their phones and Zune devices with their computers. Windows Phone 7 devices have no Zune client to sync with a Mac, which would have left Mac owners out in the cold. However, Microsoft is releasing the Windows Phone 7 Connector software for Mac, allowing Mac users to sync content from iTunes, iPhoto, and other areas of their Mac, directly to their Windows Phone 7 and Zune handhelds. Hey...it's better than nothing. We give you a look at how it all works in this episode.

Windows Phone 7 launches on November 8 here in the US, and in just three days over in Europe. I got a chance to sit in (okay, I kinda took it over) on Windows Phone Radio a couple days ago to talk to Brian Seitz and Matt Akers about what we can all expect from the launch, from the software, and from the hardware devices that we will see launching. We chat about Zune, Xbox Live on the devices, and also what it took to bring a bunch of Microsoft divisions together to collaborate on this operating system. It's all good stuff, and if you're interested in WIndows Phone 7 or mobile devices in general, give it a listen.

I'm gonna try and make semi-regular appearances on the show, so if there are any questions you have, feel free to send them my way!

Amazon just updated their Amazon Mobile app for iPhone to now include barcode scanning. Basically, while you are out and about shopping, you can use your iPhone to scan the barcode of whatever you are thinking of buying, and Amazon will give you their price on the item. From there, you can purchase it and choose all your shipping options. Seriously, we have no idea what took Amazon so long to implement this, but it’ll definitely be a money saver. You can download the Amazon Mobile app for free.

Apple wondered what would happen if the MacBook and the iPad "hooked up," and the answer is the new MacBook Air. The new MacBook Air is thinner and lighter than its predecessor, weighing just 2.9 pounds, it's 0.68 inches thick at its thickest area, and 0.11 inches at the thinnest. It's an all unibody enclosure, and it picks up that single-button glass trackpad that the MacBooks and MacBook Pros have been sporting for a while now. You've got a 13.3-inch model with a 1440 x 900 LED backlit display, and a smaller 11.6-inch model with a 1366 x 768 display. You get a couple of USB ports, a mini DisplayPort, stereo speakers, 802.11n WiFi, and an Intel Core 2 Duo processor. The 13-inch model also gets an SD card slot. They all used fast SSD chips, with instant-on support and 30-days of standby battery life.

The new MacBook Air starts at $999, and is on sale starting today.

Remember when the Internet was a place where you could come to put a mask on, and say whatever you wanted, however you wanted thanks to anonymity? Those were the golden days. Nowadays, however, with the advent of Facebook, more and more people are wearing their hearts on their digital sleeves. And the simple truth of the matter is some people look a hell of a lot better masked.

There was a time when diaries were locked, stuffed in the depths of a sock drawer, and guarded to the death with stubborn vigilance. Anyone else reading your diary was unthinkable! The embarrassment intolerable, and the public humiliation imminent. Finding someones diary was like a goldmine; for that person became Silly Putty in your hands, willing to do anything to avoid a single sentence being uttered. So what has changed? Why are people becoming so damn open with their Facebook status updates? When you treat Facebook as if it were your diary, an element of self-loathing and attention-whoring tends to walk hand in hand with it. But the truth is nobody really cares about your uninteresting morning in traffic, or the dinner you finally managed to get off Facebook long enough to fix. It’s obvious you need a friend, but putting “Dear FB” in all of your posts isn’t going to help your cause.

This, all thanks to a simple question Facebook “asks” upon signing on; ‘what’s on your mind?’ For some people, this translates into a reassuring arm wrapped snugly around the width of their body as if to say: “What’s wrong, champ? Holding up okay?” Impromptu emotional breakdowns and late night confessionals are the resulting offenses. It could be said that Facebook is the modern day Catholic confessional; only, the person listening on the other side more than likely doesn’t know what to think about your overly dramatic musings. Such statements should be kept in private, away from your 458 online friends, of whom 85% you don’t even speak with. Why should they have to suffer through your intolerable emotionally charged status updates? Keep it to yourself for a change. You’re not helping matters by making yourself out to be a public spectacle, and example of what not to do.

So I will reiterate, Facebook is not your personal diary. Clearly you need help, and Facebook is not the appropriate venue for this. For that their are psychiatrists, support groups, and other specialty services specifically for people like you. So the next time your pal Facebook wants to know what’s on your mind, remember, no one really cares when you make it all about you. So, invest in paper, pens, and a sock drawer to stuff it. Good day.

Had to laugh…..very fun article. Does remind me though, how many of the people are writing what might be thought of as serious thoughts and perhaps, percieved problems are only posting what may bring the most replies. I know there are the percentage who are just unable to write without puking their guts all over those who are willing to liste…I mean….read. And some of those are in need of help from a more professional venue than those listed as “friends” on FB. However, I enjoy reading some rants and raves and downright impossible to believe stuff.
I dunno….should I really believe that guy who caught a fish so large, that when they were able to pull it from the lake, the lake dropped two inches?

Update: Apple has made it official - FaceTime for OS X launches today in beta!

We're checking out the Back to the Mac event live right now, and we noticed this interesting and all-too-familiar icon in the dock during the demos. Looks like FaceTime is coming to OS X, by way of iChat!

In an extraordinary attempt at transparency, the Greater Manchester Police has been tweeting every single call, minuscule or serious, on Twitter. So many tweets have been coming in that the UK based police department had to create three separate accounts to get around TwitJail. Chief Constable Peter Fahy discussed the point of this Twitter overload:

"It is a serious message about transparency and how we get that out to the public."

"As well as serious crimes, we deal with many social issues and other incidents that the public are quite surprised about.

"Through this experience we get a better picture that crime is connected to our social issues such as drug use and relationship breakdowns.

"Many of the things we deal with are about the same people: missing people who have been missing 60 or 70 times before or repeat offenders putting demands on public services."

Since they started tweeting, the GMP Twitter page has skyrocketed from 3,000 followers to over 14,000. Tweets consist of calls to 999 (the British version of 911), such as: "Man refuses to leave the gym", "Woman being followed by suspicious vehicle", "Woman asking for advice about ex partner putting abusive messages on Facebook ", "Man calls police to say he is going away over Christmas, is worried he is going to be burgled".

The amount of updates shed light on the overwhelming amount of emergency calls made to the GMP in just 24hrs. Have a look at what's going on outside of America at their three Twitter pages:

After a short two-day delay, the GreenPois0n iOS 4.1 jailbreak tool is now available for download. Unfortunately, like Limera1n before it, it’s a Windows-only tool for now, and the OS X version should be available shortly. We used Limera1n to jailbreak an iPhone 4 a couple of days ago, and while it’s nice to have tools like SBSettings, and BiteSMS back in our lives, we’ve found that quite a few of the jailbreak apps that we know and love are in beta, pending a full release that is compatible with iOS 4.1. Still, we’re definitely happy to have our phones functioning the way we want them to, rather than the way Apple wants them to. GreenPois0n is free, and supports iPhone 4, iPad, iPhone 3GS, and the third- and fourth-gen iPod touch.

Microsoft finally unleashed all their Windows Phone 7 news today, which we will be sharing in a bit. They also put out their first Windows Phone 7 ad, and we’ve gotta say, we think it’s a good one. It got a chuckle or two out of us, and seems apropos for this day and age. Give it a look!

Yesterday, Apple announced the new features and availability of iLife '11. We were definitely excited about picking it up, even though we noticed that a lot of the features that Apple was showing off in iMovie and iPhoto seemed to be fairly incremental (we aren't big users of GarageBand, so we couldn't tell you if the new features there were awesome or not.) So we figured that one unannounced "feature" would likely be that the iLife suite had been converted to 64 bit. After all, Snow Leopard has had more than enough time to mature out in the wild, and it seems that developers left and right have jumped onto the 64 bit bandwagon. That's why we were sorely disappointed when we launched Activity Monitor and found that, unlike just about every other process and application we are running on the Mac Pro, the iLife apps are still labeled as "Intel" rather than "Intel 64 bit." I guess we will have to wait and see what happens with iLife '12 or '13 at this point.

Yes, it is interesting that there was a big push for 64 bit due to it’s better memory capabilities. It’s understandable that this is of lower priority, given all that is going on in Apple’s universe.

I still think it would be nice to have these as 64 bit applications.. I’m hoping that iPhoto 11 is more responsive as iTunes 10 appears to be without being 64 bit.

Help me here: if iPhoto were 64-bit, what would I be able to do that I can’t now? What would be noticeably faster about iMovie? How many more tracks/minutes would I be able to handle in GarageBand?

I’m not aware of any end-user difference in realistic applications of these non-pro apps from being constrained to work in 32-bit mode. In apps that don’t need chunks of data bigger than 32 bits define, 32-bit code runs faster.

So again: is this just a “my address space is bigger than your address space” thing, or is there some benefit to these apps going 64 bit?

Apple is in the midst of their quarterly financial results call, and the impressive numbers are in. The big one here is that Apple sold 14.1 million iPhone in their Q4 2010 quarter, which is almost double what they sold in Q4 2009, and is just...wow. In addition, for the first time iPad has outsold Macs with 4.19 million units sold, despite Apple selling more Macs this quarter than any other quarter in history (3.89 million.) This all leads to Apple bringing in over $20 billion for the quarter, and profiting over $4 billion.

The most interesting thing here to us is that these numbers are before the holiday season began, and you just know the Q1 2011 numbers will very likely be even higher. Full press release after the jump.

Apple Reports Fourth Quarter Results

Record Mac, iPhone and iPad Sales
Highest Revenue and Earnings Ever

CUPERTINO, California-October 18, 2010-Apple® today announced financial results for its fiscal 2010 fourth quarter ended September 25, 2010. The Company posted record revenue of $20.34 billion and net quarterly profit of $4.31 billion, or $4.64 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $12.21 billion and net quarterly profit of $2.53 billion, or $2.77 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 36.9 percent compared to 41.8 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 57 percent of the quarter's revenue.

Apple sold 3.89 million Macs during the quarter, a 27 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. The Company sold 14.1 million iPhones in the quarter, representing 91 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 9.05 million iPods during the quarter, representing an 11 percent unit decline from the year-ago quarter. The Company also sold 4.19 million iPads during the quarter.

"We are blown away to report over $20 billion in revenue and over $4 billion in after-tax earnings-both all-time records for Apple," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "iPhone sales of 14.1 million were up 91 percent year-over-year, handily beating the 12.1 million phones RIM sold in their most recent quarter. We still have a few surprises left for the remainder of this calendar year."

"We're thrilled with the performance and strength of our business, generating almost $5.7 billion in cash flow from operations during the quarter," said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple's CFO. "Looking ahead to the first fiscal quarter of 2011, we expect revenue of about $23 billion and we expect diluted earnings per share of about $4.80."

Not to be outdone by Amazon, Target, and Walmart selling the iPad, Verizon Wireless and AT&T brick-and-mortar locations will begin selling the Apple tablet beginning October 28. This marks the first time that Verizon is carrying an iOS device to date, and likely fuels speculation that the iPhone is coming to VZW in early 2011. They'll be bundling the iPads with their MiFi 2200 Intelligent Mobile Hotspot, with pricing set at $630, $730, and $830 for the 16, 32, and 64GB models respectively. Users will get 1GB of monthly data allowance for $20, contract-free. On the AT&T side of things, they'll be selling the WiFi + 3G model of the iPad, which connects to the AT&T 3G network, and users there will pay $15 for 200MB of data, or $25 for 2GB monthly, no contracts.

Looks like the guys over at Cult of Mac have received a few interesting tidbits of information as it pertains to a possible MacBook Air refresh at this Wednesday's Back to the Mac Apple event. Here's a look at what they say they've been told:

The new model is also apparently much snappier than its underpowered predecessor. ”It boots so fast, it’s unbelievable,” our source says. “It’s amazing how fast it boots up.”A faster 13-inch model with upgradeable options should appeal to pro users, while a cheaper 11-inch MacBook Air might be more attractive to students and casual users.A 50-percent bigger battery, delivering 8-10 hours of battery life. The current MacBook Air has a 5-hour battery.The new machine is thinner and lighter, weighing less than the current model’s 3lbs, our source says.The new enclosure is also an aluminum unibody design, like the current model — but not as curvy.Same black keyboard as current MBA, same single-button Multi-Touch trackpad. [wha? Current MacBook trackpad has separate button, unlike the rendering]Upgradable RAM (base 2GB [-boo!], SSD. Also NVidia GeForce 320M integrated graphicsTwo configs: 2.1Ghz (with 2GB of RAM) and 2.4 GHz (with 4GB of RAM).

Of course, we take all this stuff with a grain of salt until Apple actually shows it off, but the MacBook Air is in serious need of a hardware refresh, so we wouldn't be surprised to see it happen on Wednesday. Pricing on these is also rumored to be dropping from the current $1,500 starting price, with the 11.6-inch model starting at $1,100 and the 13.3-inch version going for $1,400.

We’ve already given you the first portion of our Apple TV review when we gave you five things we like about the Apple TV. Now it’s time we dig into the things that we straight up hate about Apple’s second try at a living room set top box. There are some things that were omitted or ignored that we kind of can’t stand, and other decisions for sub-optimal experiences that were seemingly made just because Apple felt like they could get away with it. Read on for our list of five things that we hate about the second generation Apple TV.

You can’t purchase content. I honestly don’t understand why the Apple TV loses out on the ability to purchase content. Sure, on its own there isn’t that much storage space to allow for locally storing a bunch of high definition television shows or movies, we get that. However, with Home Sharing, we see no reason that you can’t put in a purchase option, and have the ability to play that purchase on the Apple TV, while sending a notification to iTunes to download and store that content when it gets the chance.

Not enough content. Again, this goes back to the whole thing about not being able to purchase. Since the new Apple TV is rental-only, it only shows you rentable content. That means that TV shows that aren’t available for rental simply don’t appear, despite being available in the iTunes store. There were quite a few shows that I wanted to check out that simply weren’t there.

No 1080p playback. In another confusing move, the Apple TV maxes out at 720p output, despite the hardware’s ability to push out 1080p. Even worse, companies like VUDU have services that have been doing high quality streaming 1080p rentals that look absolutely stunning, along with Dolby Digital Plus audio. We hoped Apple would have at least matched this, if not leapfrogged it. Instead, we are stuck playing lame 720p video on our 1080p display.

The Music menu is no more. One of the things I loved about the original Apple TV was downloading and watching music videos. I also love browsing the music section of the iTunes store, and the Apple TV was a far better experience for that when it came to video than the desktop iTunes client ever was. However, that music menu is now gone. Again, we are guessing that this is because the Apple TV is now a rental-only device, and music videos aren’t able to be rented. Color us highly annoyed by this decision.

Buried screensaver settings. Older Apple TV units show up in the iTunes sidebar as a connected device. From there, you can set up sync preferences, and also manage what you want the screensaver to include. For whatever reason though, the new Apple TV doesn’t show up in the iTunes sidebar unless it is physically plugged in to the computer. Instead, the screensaver settings are buried in the Advanced menu within iTunes, a spot that not many people will think to check right out of the gate.

The fact the new AppleTV does not support 1080p playback is easily explained. Probably 1% of the US has the bandwidth necessary to stream 1080p content at its 30+mb/sec rate, or whatever it is, using the BluRay spec as the benchmark. That is a HUGE rate and way beyond most people’s intenet connection capability. And unless you have a very large HDTV, you can’t see the difference anyway.
The absence of the Music Menu is just another reason I will not be buying this device. I am NOT going to leave my computer on 24/7/365 just so I can watch a music video or TV show, etc that I bought years ago and could watch at any time on my old model AppleTV. That’s just silly. Add up all the times you will be spending $.99 on “rentals” and I will bet you any amount of money you will be be spending a LOT of money per month. No thank you!
